Description

"Dans un malheur comme le mien...
...La chandelle ne vaut rien"

Le Luneux is a song from the french band Malicorne. The musicians of this band were very inspired by medieval music, and their songs were related to Middle Ages (unfortunately the band no longer exists).
In the context of this song, the "Luneux" is a blind person ("Lune" means "Moon", so maybe "Moony" can be a good translation, I don't know, it's not a dreamy story...).

Here are the lyrics in french, and then in English. I made the translation, so if you find mistakes, don't hesitate to tell me :)

"Je suis aveugle, on me plaint
Et moi je plains tout le monde
Mes deux yeux ne sont plus pleins
Car ils ont perdu leur bombe
Dans un malheur comme le mien
Tu t'en, tu t'en, tu t'en moques
La chandelle ne vaut rien

Je me lève dès le matin
J'm'en vais d'village en village
L'un me donne un bout de pain
L'autre un morceau de fromage
Et quelquefois par hasard
Tu t'en, tu t'en, tu t'en moques
Un petit morceau de lard

Je me moque du mercier
Et de toutes ses cassettes
Je n'use point de papier
Encore moins de lunettes
J'ai pour peigne mes dix doigts
Tu t'en, tu t'en, tu t'en moques
Mes deux manches pour mouchoir

J'ai mon chien et mon bâton
Mes deux compagnons fidèles
L'un me mène à tâtons
L'autre au bout d'une ficelle
N'aimeriez-vous pas bien mieux
Tu t'en, tu t'en, tu t'en moques
Ces deux guides que vos yeux

Si jamais me v'nait un fils
Dans cette agréable vie
Je prierais bien le bon Dieu
Aussi la Vierge Marie
Qu'ils lui crèvent les deux yeux
Tu t'en, tu t'en, tu t'en moques
Pour en faire un vieux luneux"

"I am blind, people pity me
And I pity everybody
My eyes are no longer full
Because they have lost their bulge
In a misfortune like mine
You don’t, you don’t, you don’t care
The candle is worthless

I wake up in the morning
I walk from village to village
This one gives me a piece of bread
The other a lump of cheese
And sometimes by chance
You don’t, you don’t, you don’t care
A little lump of pig fat

I mock the mercer
And all his caskets
I do not use paper
Let alone glasses
My ten fingers are my comb
You don’t, you don’t, you don’t care
My two sleeves are my handkerchief

I have my dog and my cane
My two loyal companions
This one leads me haphazardly
The other at the end of a string
Wouldn’t you like better
You don’t, you don’t, you don’t care
These two guides than your eyes

If I ever had a son
In this pleasant life
I would pray the good Lord
The Virgin Mary too
May they puncture his two eyes
You don’t, you don’t, you don’t care
To make him an old moony"
